When many young athletes begin making contact with college basketball coaches, one of the first things they do is to go online and fill out a basketball recruiting profile. Just about every college basketball program, no matter the division level, has a profile or questionnaire you can fill out online.

While completing the basketball recruiting profile is not a wrong step to take, I don't think it should be your first step. Why? The primary reason is because everyone else is doing that. Everyone who is trying to make it to the next level is simply going online and filling out the profile. As the old saying goes, "if you do what everyone else does, you'll end up like everyone else".

To set yourself apart and stand out from the crowd, you need to do something different. Although coaches put these profiles on their websites, I'm not sure how much they even look at them. If they are getting too many of them completed, they probably never even get around to looking at them.

Instead of doing the basketball recruiting profile first, I suggest you take these steps:

1. Decide what level of college basketball is right for you

2. Make a list of colleges at that level of competition

3. Develop an athletic resume

4. Develop a letter to send to coaches

5. Mail your letter and your resume to those coaches

Getting a personal letter and a resume from you is a much better way of getting the coach's attention. Once they read your letter and resume, they will often write back and then ask you to fill out their basketball recruiting profile. When that happens, they will actually be anticipating your profile instead of you being just another generic profile they received.

You should market and promote yourself to college coaches. However, don't start with the online basketball recruiting profile as most athletes do. Start the process with a letter and your resume. Its makes a big difference in the response rate you'll get from coaches.
